Unknown Facts About Luke Skywalker

Posted on

Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker is the character we all think of when we hear about Star Wars – even though he didn’t have much to do in the latest movies, he’s still the saga’s icon. Spoilers ahead – he only had a few seconds of action in 2015’s The Force Awakens, but he’s gossiped to be in for much more in 2017’s Episode VIII. What a time to remember some cool trivia about the guy! The Star Wars canon might have been partially reset to make way for the new movies, but this article only deals with the real stuff – when it doesn’t, we tell you so. Take a look at how Luke’s character was shaped!

So the fan conspiracies about Luke being a Sith Lord or maybe Kylo Ren himself don’t seem too plausible, but there is one fact that may make you think Luke has a bit of the dark side in him. Mark Hamill, so well-known for his role is Star Wars, has actually also voiced the Joker – they even nominated him for the BAFTAGames Award for this feat. Hamill seems great at impersonating villains – he even did one from the Star Wars universe, the Sith Lord Darth Bane. How can we be sure about Luke now?

It’s hard to believe that we could be oblivious of so many crucial facts about Luke after so many movies, but that’s the state we’ve been put in by the reset of the canon. Although Luke married a girl, Mara Jade, in Star Wars Legends, Mark Hamill has something different to say about Luke’s sexuality:

“His sexuality is never addressed in the films. Luke is whatever the audience wants him to be, so you can decide for yourself.”

Luke has had numerous adventures in the galaxy and provided us with fun in spades, but he’s still holding many secrets – here’s to us hoping we’ll find out soon.

Skywalker sounds so heavenly and pleasant, but Luke was actually meant to be called Starkiller – not to mention his first name could have been Anakin. However, the producers were afraid the name was too devilish for a positive hero and also, connection with the serial killer Charles Manson might have emerged. Although neither Anakin nor Starkiller ended directly connected to Luke, both names appeared numerously in the saga. Anakin doesn’t have to be mentioned and as far as Starkiller is concerned, Galen Malek was nicknamed so and there was also a Starkiller Base in the latest movie.

A new book meant for kids has been released, A New Hope: The Princess, The Scoundrel, and The Farm Boy. It elaborates on Luke’s childhood on Tatooine, explaining how he got shaped into the adult we got to know. It appears that Owen, Luke’s uncle, tried to get the boy to lead an ordinary life, but his aunt Beru awakened the desire for adventure in the boy. He’d pilot a T-16 Skyhopper as a mere teenager after being saved from evil Jabba the Hutt’s bandits by Obi-Wan Kenobi. A pleasant read for your little ones.

After Luke went to the Tosche Station, he had to excuse himself to his uncle Owen in a recognizable way: “But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” Actually, there was initially a scene in A New Hope in which this dialog’s background appeared. Luke was indeed “wasting time with his friends” like Owen accused him. Biggs Darklighter announced that he would soon run away and join the fight of the Rebellion, which could have acted as a stimulus for Luke to do the same.

It’s quite untypical for a Jedi to start training at a mature age – they didn’t want to accept Anakin when he was nine due to this being too much. As a fully grown teenager, Luke has to train his way to become a Jedi as if on a self-taught course. That doesn’t last a day, certainly – there are 3 years between when Luke begins his training and is deemed ready. Lacking a true mentor, Luke has to solve many issues through trial and error. Reading the journals of Obi-Wan or frequenting Jedi Temples were some ways that Luke used to harness his powers.

According to the movies, the period that Luke spent training with Yoda overlapped with Han and Leia’s escape from the Empire. While the latter only took a short time, the former could have not – Luke’s powers couldn’t have grown so significantly over the course of a way days. I’m Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, it was estimated that Luke’s venture took about six months. A believable amount, considering Luke’s advances over the period. Now it seems it’s not true, though. According to Pablo Hidalgo, Dagobah – where Luke and Yoda trained – is a place so strongly affected by the Force that time does not flow normally there. It is then perfectly fine for Luke to have spent months training while in Han and Leia’s perception much less time passed.

The one thing that we know for certain about the origins of the Wampa attack is that it all began in a galaxy that’s actually outs. Mark Hamill had a car accident that left his face quite visibly injured. He had to undergo some serious procedures to get better and still, his face would always look different. So what about that of Luke? According To George Lucas, the Wampa attack was always meant to be there. Some producers have only admitted that it was moved in the chronology to precede the rest of The Empire Strikes Back, thus explaining Luke’s facial features. Others say that with so many years between A New Hope and its sequel, Luke’s mauled face could have been easily explained without devoting an entire scene to it. As many details as we might find, we’ll never know for sure.

Luke’s age was not actually explicitly stated in every movie, but we did manage to deduce how old he was in respective episodes thanks to the information from Revenge of the Sith. We now know that he entered A New Hope as a 19-year-old, being three years older in The Empire Strikes Back and then a year older in the Revenge of the Sith. That makes him a whopping fifty three in The Force Awakens – more than a decade younger than Mark Hamill right now. It’s not the first time that an actor is quite a lot older than his Star Wars character – we’ve already seen that with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Supposed to be 57 in A New Hope, he was actually impersonated by Alec Guinness six years his senior.

The second time Luke fought Vader, he wasn’t using his father’s old lightsaber anymore – he had constructed a new one. In Return of the Jedi: Beware the Power of the Dark Side!, a new canonical book for kids, it emerged that between Cloud City and Jabba’s Palace Luke was searching for parts that he would later assemble into the new weapon. The last piece was found in the old Tatooine house of Ben Kenobi. Luke couldn’t have trained with his lightsaber a lot before taking on his biggest foe again.

Luke Skywalker is a perfect monomyth – the term coined by Joseph Campbell in The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Like Odysseus or King Arthur in the earlier years, Luke is the typical main character, a strong hero whose journey passes through a few major points and breakthroughs as he lets us witness his amazing adventures. The monomyth always has a mentor, usually has an uncertain past – just compare Obi-Wan to Merlin, Arthur’s orphaned childhood to… Hmm… Luke’s?

Although there wasn’t much of Luke in the final version of The Force Awakens, a leaked earlier version of the script provided us with a lot of speculation material. Consider that Luke was revealed to have been hiding on a planet named Ahch-To. The fans have already concluded that Ahch is “brother” in Hebrew and if you pronounce the whole name, it sounds just like “Act Two”. There is a description of Luke when he sees Rey:

“A kindness in his eyes, but there’s something tortured, too. He doesn’t need to ask her who she is, or what she is doing here. His look says it all.”

Then as she wants to give him the lightsaber:

“HOLD ON LUKE SKYWALKER’S INCREDIBLE FACE, amazed and conflicted at what he sees, as our MUSIC BUILDS, the promise of an adventure, just beginning…”

We’ll surely find out what that all means in the next movie.
