Mass extinction of 90 percent of species on Earth. 252 million years ago, about 90 percent of species were wiped off the face of the earth. Scientists suspect volcanos and asteroids are to blame, but there are also those who think the true culprit can only be seen through a microscope.

Where did oceans come from? Water covers about 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. Recent studies seem to have found that water on the surface of our planet was always there, but at the same time, this theory seems to contradict hundreds of other theories.

The Wow! signal. In 1977, a volunteer of the SETI program, Jerry Ehman received the first signal from another planet. The signal lasted 72 seconds. Further attempts to receive the same signal failed and it still remains a mystery where the 72-second long signal came from.

A stone with the Ten Commandments. A stone that weighs 80 tons is located in Hidden Mountain, New Mexico, and has a resemblance of the Ten Commandments written all over it. Locals claim that the stone has been there ‘always’, and it is yet unclear whether that’s true or not.

Placebo effect. The placebo effect is when a patient recovers or significantly improves the state of health only because he/she believes in the drug he/she is taking. The drug, meanwhile, contains plain lactose or vitamins, but the patient is not aware of that. Scientists have yet to figure out what is the true reason why the placebo effect works.

The Dutch freighter SS Ourang Medan. In July 1947, several American ships near Indonesia received a message from the SS Ourang Medan. The message was, “All officers including captain are dead lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.” This message was then followed by indecipherable Morse code and one final message… “I die.” When the first rescue vessel arrived, there were numerous dead bodies (including a dog) on board.

The missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. The MH370 vanished without a trace while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8. There were no distress signals from the cockpit at the time when the plane vanished from radar screens, and the weather was clear. A massive search and rescue operation was then launched, but never found anything related to the Boeing 777.
