The Exorcist

No matter how many lists you look at, the Exorcist will always make it to top for all the right reasons. With amazing direction by William Friedkin, this movie is about a girl possessed by a demon spirit, who will make you cry yourself to sleep for a few nights.

Jaws

The entire Jaws movie franchise is the reason some folks are too afraid to go anywhere near the ocean anymore. The first Jaws movie directed by Speilberg brought high-intensity shark attacks and terrifying anticipation together. While sharks may kill less people than cows do, Jaws definitely wrote down the big-toothed fish in our bad books.

The Shining

Stephen King is popular for a great number of novels, but The Shining in its cinema form set the standard for horror movies that has rarely been trumped. Whether it is the horrifying Room 237, the elevators pooled with blood, or the outstandingly creepy performance of Jack Nicholson, The Shining won’t let you sleep easy the next night.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Another classic scary film franchise, nothing beats the bleak horror genre that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre established. The Leatherface and his big-bad chainsaw, poor Sally being forced to a cannibalistic meal and bloody gore throughout – what else do you need to stop eating for a week?

Poltergeist

It would be a crime to leave out this creepy classic, which has tormented generations with its wicked scenes. The story circles around a family, which experiences strange occurrences in their Cuest Verde home, but the most creepy part about Poltergeist is that actual deaths occurred during the making of the film.

The Blair Witch Project

There are movies that give you the thrills with vampires, ghosts and vicious beasts, then there’s The Blair Witch Project that changes the rules of horror films. This incredible movie focuses on the first-person perspective of the characters, shows their physical and psychological fears, keeping you on the edge of your seat at all times.

Insidious

This thrilling horror deserves a spot on the top 10 list for one simple fact – it makes you believe that the horror scene in Hollywood is not dead just yet. With a mesmerizing story, a hell lot of shockers and fabulous plot-twists, Insidious is a movie to watch in broad daylight with plenty of people around.

The Ring

The Japanese know how to make spine-chilling horror movies, and one of their classics was the inspiration behind The Ring. With a story plot based on a “killer videotape”, The Ring has one of the creepiest main characters who will make you turn off your TV and hide under the blankets like a little girl.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A prized addition to the slasher horror movie genre, A Nightmare on Elm Street immortalized Freddy Krueger, who visits and terrorizes a bunch of kids in their nightmares. With Freddy standing next to you and his claws grinding against the wall, how long until you fall asleep? – Probably never.

28 Days Later

Zombie movies seem like a washed off genre now, especially with The Walking Dead giving you all the “zombified” horror you need. However, Danny Boyle treated the zombie genre as a real-life situation in 28 Days Later, which offered more super-fast zombies and nightmarish situations than your feeble mind can fathom.
