Celebrities Who Were Married Before Coming Out

Posted on

It’s not easy to realize which gender you’re truly attracted to if it’s not the opposite – especially if you grew up a few decades ago, you were probably fully engrossed in the straight lifestyle and couldn’t even envision yourself as being different. This rule of life is no different when it comes to the upper crust: take a look at the list of celebrities who were married to partners of the opposite sex when they understood that they were actually looking for something else.

“I’ve been gay all my life,” said Little Richard in 1995, although we dare to say it didn’t look like it when he was married to Ernestine Campbell for 4 long year – from 1959 to 1963.

Elton John

So this one took it step by step, coming out as bisexual in 1976, which wasn’t the most sensible step, considering the date – the society wasn’t yet ready to accept homosexual artists. Elton John suffered a bad period after releasing the statement, but repaired the damaged when he married Renate Blauel (woo-hoo, a female) in 1984. That only lasted four years and when they divorced, it seems that the artist was finally ready to describe himself as “comfortably gay”.

Meredith Baxter

They say that the third try is supposed to be lucky, but it didn’t work out in Meredith Baxter’s case. After three unsuccessful marriages – respectively, to Robert Lewis Bush, David Birney, and Michael Blodgett. After a few decades of misery, she finally came out to the wider audience in 2009. She’d already been in a relationship with Nancy Locke for 4 years back then, and the two married in 2013.

Tony Richardson

In 1985, the fact that Tony Richardson had HIV hit the news; we hope it wasn’t the case back in 1962, when he married Vanessa Redgrave for a relationship that only lasted 5 years. Father of two children, he stated that he was bisexual after the news about his disease went public, and died of complications in 1991.

Vincente Minnelli

Remember the one about three times lucky? Vincente Minnelli took it to fourth and still didn’t best biology. Married to Judy Garland, Georgette Magnani, Denise “Danica” Radosavljevic, and Margaretta Lee Anderson, he even fathered a daughter, but never came out to the press. He was nevertheless believed to lead a double life, openly gay and involved in numerous affair in New York, and back in closet when with his family in Los Angeles.

Peter Allen only suffered one unsuccessful, heterosexual marriage in his life – that with Liza Minnelli. Afterwards, his life was all nice and dandy, as he came out and led a peaceful life in a long-term relation with Gregory Connell until he unfortunately died of AIDS complications in 1984.

Wanda Sykes

It was her conservative family’s fault that pushed Wanda Sykes into entering an unhappy, heterosexual marriage that certainly ended in a divorce in 1998. After 10 years Wanda came out to the public, and she had actually been married to a woman for a year already. Alex Niedbalski, her wife, didn’t get the family’s acceptance in the first place, but the family matters were fortunately soon resolved and there’s no generation gap spoiling Wanda’s happiness anymore.

Peter Marc Jacobson came out as gay right after divorcing his wife Fran Drescher in 1999, with whom he still seems to be best buddies. They even host a show called Happily Divorced together – talk about a great relation.

Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming’s heterosexual marriage didn’t work out even though he only came out as a bisexual. He’s been married to Grant Shaffer since 2007.

Portia De Rossi

Portia De Rossi could write a book based on her amorous experience, which was, honestly, quite horrible. She married Mel Metcalfe in 1996, and she later admitted that her sole reason was that the relationship might enable her to get a green card. Mel would then leave Portia for he own brother’s wife – talk about one unlucky lesbian. In 2000, Portia was already dating females, namely the director Francesca Gregorini. The next, and so far the last step was her relationship with Ellen DeGeneres that led her to the public coming out in 2005. The pair are now happily married.

Darren Hayes

Darren Hayes, who used to sing with the Savage Garden, married Colby Taylor in 1994 to later separate from her after four years and divorce after two more. This is especially sad considering that those two were a thing since childhood. After the 2000’s divorce, Hayes started his coming out process. In 2006, he married Richard Cullen.
