“I am trying to learn how to not pick apart my every flaw,” says Cara Delevingne, as she’s found the courage to share her innermost thought with the public. The brave celebrity has opened up about her depression in a moving series of tweets.

Fortunately, the journey didn’t influence Cara in a way that would make her leave her exceptional career.

“I found myself surrendering to the industry’s approval process. I felt like I needed validation from everyone. As a result, I lost sight of myself and what it meant to be happy, what it meant to be successful,” wrote Cara. Her struggle is so human.

Here is the statement Cara delivered on her background at the 2015 Women in the World summit.

“I think I pushed myself so far [at school] that I got to the point where I had a mental breakdown … I was completely suicidal, I didn’t want to live any more. I thought that I was completely alone. I also realised how lucky I was, and what a wonderful family and wonderful friends I had, but that didn’t matter. I wanted the world to swallow me up, and nothing seemed better to me than death.”
