All You Need To Know About Friends’ Reunion

Posted on

We’re going to see Friends again!? What joy and what commotion ensued when we found out we’d have yet another chance to meet everyone’s favorites, the characters we’ve been missing for so many years. Many a fan would kill for a chance to see Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey, and Phoebe in one room… Unfortunately (or maybe it’s for the best!) there was nothing to kill for, as the Friends’ reunion was far from the reunion that we wanted to witness – and there were no friends at all.

We did get to meet the actors, though; David, Jennifer, Courtney, Matt, and Lisa brought together in memory of director James Burrows. Someone is missing and yes, it’s Matthew Perry – the guy was apparently too involved in a West End play to appear. So there were no Friends and it wasn’t even the full squad, but it still brings joy to a fan to see the lot in one room; lets us pretend Central Perk is still they’re favorite venue… Luckily, we still heard a bunch of hot gossip and fun facts about Friends, so… read on!

Friends Reunion First Detail.

Remember The One With All The Poker, a memorable episode from a way back then, in the first season? The one where the guys played poker and Rachel ended up showing Ross who’s the boss… Although he might have let her? That story actually happened in real life and ended up transferred to the show thanks to Burrows’ influence. The actors wanted to create a true affinity and, well, befriend each other – just like in the show. (Yes, they’re best friends, I know, they really are…) So they played poker – James Burrows even let them use his dressing room. Because, you know, they were so anonymous back then that Burrows’ place was more spacious than any of theirs… He then ended up directing an episode inspired by his own doings.

Friends Reunion Second Detail.

The favorite urban legend of everyone – well, at least my favorite – is that about the cast having been ordered to sign a contract saying none of them would sleep with another. Makes sense, right? If you want a group of people to correctly act out being a gang of best friends, you definitely want to reduce the tension as much as you can. And you don’t want to deal with drama! Andy Cohen, the reunion’s host, actually asked the guys about the contract; everyone got quiet… Until David Schwimmer wasn’t, and what he said made the fans go crazy. “Well, that was broken”, he said. Hell! Soon afterward Kudrow added that she “was not asked to sign anything like that.” I’m still excited, though.

Friends Reunion The Third Detail…

About the show’s first months, Jennifer Aniston said: “At the beginning it was not a hard thing. We really just wanted to hang out with each other, it was not a ‘we have to do this, ugh’. We really just fell in love and adored each other instantly.” The guys have already confirmed that while the show started airing, they were really close to each other, having bonded as much as their on-screen counterparts. They would actually meet up at someone’s place to watch the show’s episodes as they aired and make notes about their performances, helping each other out with well-spirited remarks. It’s no surprise the show started off as such a success if the cast felt so good at their job.

What we really love about Friends is who they are, each and every one of them. And why are they that way? It’s of course thanks to the cast, every actor the perfect fit for their character. I mean, can you even imagine someone from the gang played by a different person? Why would you even want to imagine that!? As true as it is, two characters could have actually ended up with their impersonators swapped. Courtney Cox auditioned for Rachel and Jennifer Aniston, for Monica. Hard to envisage! While we’re on auditions, Lisa Kudrow was actually asked to repeat hers before Burrows accepted her for the role… Back to Rachel and Monica: as soon the cameras started rolling, everyone involved was fast to realize that it should be the other way around. In The One With Two Parts, we actually witnessed the two girls pretending to be each other, and it came out great. However, it just doesn’t feel right if you think Aniston to be the real Monica – no way.

When you have to choose a favorite of something that has over 200 instances, it’s not going to be easy – especially when you’re a part of it and have a personal relation to every episode, because, of course, we’re talking about Friends again. The cast were asked to provide info on their favorite episodes and they were quick to reply. We’re sorry to remind that had Matthew Perry been there, he would have had to speak about his addiction again – as you can find out HERE, he doesn’t even remember anything of three seasons!

Back to the rest, though: according to Aniston, she loves the flashback episode, her favorite elements being “fat Monica, and Rachel pre-nose job, and Ross with his afro.” LeBlanc really liked it when he had to pretend that he’s Ross as the hockey puck slams him on the face – a part of The One with George Stephanopoulos. Courtney Cox really liked it when Ross had a tough encounter with a cat that landed on his back and kept clawing at him for a good while – watch The One With The Blackout to see it again!

On and off, and on again. Off… On… On a break!? Loving each other as hell, but never being able to keep it up for too long – heard of the scenario? You must have, because the relationship between Ross and Rachel has converted itself in a genuine TV classic, repeating itself over and over again in every sitcom that has come since. The love story did sort of keep the show spinning, but there’s another explanation for its character as delivered by James Burrows:

“It’s the same as Sam and Diane [from Cheers]. They flirted for a lot longer, but you have to shake it up.… If you don’t fight, and if you don’t get angry, you have no place to go.”

The biggest mystery that Friends fans would like to comprehend is whether the guys were actually friends at all – you know, in real life. We provide evidence that it might have indeed been the case – Courtney Cox actually admitted that she would eat lunch together with Kudrow and Aniston. Eat lunch. Every day. For ten years! Sounds great, doesn’t it? It seems the ladies had a ritual of sorts, treating themselves with a salad made by Aniston; a Cobb salad with the addition of garbanzo beans and turkey bacon. This delicious variation was later called The Jennifer Salad. Do you now feel better about the gang being an actual gang?

Considering how disappointed many people were with the Reunion, saying it was not as they wanted, I now feel obliged to touch on the subject yet again. It wasn’t the reunion we had wanted to see… And there should be no such reunion! The show has now been off for longer than it had ever been on. It’s high time we simply realized that the magic won’t reappear, well, magically – it’s just not happening. The actors combined perfectly to create an outstanding piece of TV a few decades ago, but they were at different points in their lives than they are now. They were different people in a wholly different era, back with no internet, so many years younger. The gang is not coming back. Just think how difficult it was logistically to organize a simple meet-up of the actors – and it’s not like everyone attended… The show was luckily endowed with one of the most perfect endings in the history of television. It’s not a feat to be played with – let’s leave Friends alone. Who’s up for a re-watch!?
