DiCaprio – Debunking Myths

It seems that Leonardo DiCaprio can be called a polymath, a man of all trades – or at least, he could describe himself similarly to Iron Man. You know, “a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist” come alive… Leo has also had successes in ecology, aiding the UN on a conference regarding the global warming, and he even owns his own island, but not everything you’ve heard about him is true – incoming, a few facts as false as exciting about no one else but Leo.

This hoax might end up being the largest you’ve ever heard of and it would probably have no chance of succeeding today, but back in 1998, the world was still for the taking. Nancy Jo Sales, at the time a reporter resident in New York, brought everyone to a boil with “Leo, Prince of the City”, a story focused on following in DiCaprio’s footsteps as he engaged in a partying spree in Manhattan. And do remember it was in the 90’s, with Leo thrice the party binger he is now.

Back to Nancy and her story – it’s not like she followed the real DiCaprio, but her plan came to fruition thanks to the help of Troy Allen from Detroit. Who the hell is he? All you need to know is that he’s an exact lookalike of Leonardo. “How’d you like to be Leo for a night?” from Nancy’s mouth was all it took for him to agree to her crazy scheme.

Almost everything was fake, but people still believed – all it took was a doppelganger in a limo surrounded by bodyguards and a bunch of excited youngsters, actually – Troy’s real friends who also got to live an adventure. As paparazzo started swarming around the car, so did the onlookers; then came the best bit, with Nancy calling Planet Hollywood to secure a table. And yes, she did say she was “coming with Leo”. The tourist went crazy at the sight of the celebrity; even the restaurant’s owner announced he would soon drop by to greet DiCaprio himself.

“My worst fear for this experiment was that nothing would happen, and I’d have wasted everyone’s time on a harebrained scheme,” admitted Nancy after the whole thing died down. “Quite the opposite occurred, which turned out to be much scarier.”
