The second Amendment of the Constitution gives Americans the right to keep and form a militia and “to keep and bear arms.” In a perfect world, gun owners would be trained on how to safely operate their weapon. They would also properly keep their weapon stored and secured. Gun owners would be subject to stricter gun control laws keeping weapons out of unstable people. However, the world we live in is far from perfect.

These variables have contributed to the 12 most horrific mass shootings in the US.

Newtown, Conn-Sandyhook Elementary School shootings

Adam Lanza, stormed into Sandyhook Elementary School with a gun in December of 2012. He murdered 26 people for no reason. Twenty of his victims were first grade students. After the bloodbath, Lanza proceeded to shoot himself at the scene. Prior to Lanza’s shooting spree at Sandyhook, he murdered his mother at their residence.

Columbine

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered 13 people. They ended up injuring over 21 people in the attack. Harris and Klebold were disturbed young men with a history of erratic behavior. They planned and executed the attack as retaliation for bullying they faced at school. This tragedy brought bullying into the spotlight.

Washington Navy vet shoots and kills 12 people

Aaron Alexis, former Navy vet went on a rampage and killed 12 people at a Washington Navy yard. Alexis had a running gun battle with authorities before being shot. Upon his death, his Navy records were released which show a poor conduct, absences and instability.

Islamic radicals storm the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino killing 14

Syed Rizwan Farook and has wife Tashfeen Malik killed 14 people and injured 21 people during a shooting spree at the Inland Regional Center. The attack took place during a holiday party. Reports say the couple was heavily armed and wearing protective gear during the attack. The shooters were killed after a gun battle with police. The US born couple is suspected to have ties to terrorism.

Movie theater shootings, Aurora, Colorado

James Holmes entered the Century 16 movie theater through an exit door during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Holmes started shooting into the crowd killing 12 people and injuring over 50 others. He had a history of mental illness. Holmes was arrested outside of the movie theater just after the attacks.

Gunman storms Planned Parenthood

Robert Lewis Dear entered a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado and gunned down 3 people and injured 9. The victims had all accompanied friends to the clinic. Dear’s radical anti-abortion views were cited as motif for his crimes.

Rosenburg, Oregon community college shootings

Community college student Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer went on a shooting rampage. Harper-Mercer killed 9 people at Umpqua Community College. Eight of the victims were students. He had a history of mental illness and extremist, radical views. After the bloodbath, he shot himself on the scene.

Man opens fire at military centers

Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, opened fire on two military centers roughly seven miles apart. He started shooting at a military recruitment center then drove to a Navy/Marine facility and started shooting again. Abdulazeez was shot and killed by authorities during the second attack. Four Marines and one Navy officer were killed in the shootings.

Charleston church shootings

Dylan Storm Roof, a suspected white supremacist attacked a group of people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Roof prayed with the group before he began shooting at them. The attack killed 9 people. He fled the scene and was later arrested in another state.

University of California student goes on a killing spree


College student Elliot Rodger had been scouting and planning an attack near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus for months. Rodger showed signs of instability in a manifesto video he uploaded to YouTube. He struggled with family issues, relationships with women, racist thinking, etc. In this video he described his plans for retribution. That retribution turned into a blood bath when he went on a killing spree around the University of Santa Barbara campus that killed 6 people and injured 14.

Fort Hood massacre

U.S Army Major Nidal Hasan shot 13 people and injured more than 30 in an attack on the base. Hasan was shot at the scene and is partially paralyzed. He was sentenced to death in late 2013.

Man opens fire at Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords


Long time disgruntled voter, Jared Lee Loughner attended a meet-and-greet event with Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at a Tucson supermarket. Loughner started firing bullets into the crowd killing six people and injuring 11 others. He proceeded to shoot Giffords at close range before he was nabbed by authorities. Gifford is still recovering from the damaged caused by the shooting.
